SysOps Quickstart

This quickstart gets a released Atari Mutineer ATR running as a BBS in Altirra 4.40 and walks through registering the first sysop account.

Files You Need

Use the complete release ATR:

FileUse
atari-mutineer-v<VERSION>-16mb.atrcomplete bootable BBS with bundled doors

Blackjack, Dumjin, and Tournament Arena are already installed on D1:.

Keep one clean copy of the release ATR. Use a second copy as the live board because Mutineer writes users, callers, messages, files, and settings to disk.

First Boot

  1. Mount the Mutineer ATR as D1:.
  2. Boot the Atari.
  3. Let the startup run to the WFC screen.
  4. Leave the WFC screen waiting for a call.

Startup sequence:

AUTOEXEC.BAT -> RHND850.COM -> REMMS.COM -> BASIC -> WFC

Local WFC console keys:

KeyAction
STARTlocal sysop main menu
SELECToffline tools
OPTIONshut down Mutineer

Remote sysop chat is disabled by default. D1:>DATA>SYSOP.CFG contains 0 on released ATRs, so callers using Y see SYSOP NOT AVAILABLE. without leaving the main menu. Change that file to 1 only when you want CORE to hand the caller to the SYSOP chat module.

First Caller

From your telnet client, connect to:

127.0.0.1:6507

The caller should see only:

CONNECTED PRESS [RETURN]

Press Return. Mutineer detects the terminal mode and displays the login menu.

Choose new user:

[L]ogin [N]ew user [G]oodbye > N

Enter:

  • full name;
  • handle;
  • email address;
  • password;
  • password again.

The first registered user becomes user number 1 with access level 9. That is the sysop account. Later self-registered users default to level 1.

After registration, skip optional reading prompts if you just want to reach the main menu:

Read New User Info? [Y/N] N
Read Bulletins? [Y/N] N

You should land at:

[ HH:MM:SS Command >

Basic Sysop Checks

All supported doors run from D1:>DOORS>. A missing or damaged door reports:

DOOR UNAVAILABLE.

Backups

Back up the live ATR after the first sysop account is created. Back it up again before editing message bases, file areas, door catalog rows, or text files.

The most important live files are:

  • D1:>DATA>USERS.DAT
  • D1:>DATA>USERS.IDX
  • D1:>DATA>NEXTUSER.DAT
  • D1:>DATA>CONFIG
  • D1:>DATA>CALLERS.DAT
  • D1:>DATA>DOORS.CFG
